Inflammation of a vein. It is sometimes
associated with blockage by a blood clot
(thrombosis), in which case it is more
accurately described as thrombophlebitis.
Phlebitis may occur as a result of the
hormonal changes associated with pregnancy,
or due to long-term use of contraceptive
pills, or following prolonged immobility
(which is why patients are mobilized as soon
as possible after surgery). If a major vein
is involved, nearly always in a leg, the part
beyond the blockage swells and may remain
engorged for weeks. It is very painful.
Treatment is with anticoagulant drugs and
sometimes surgery.
