  1. Inflammation of a vein. It is sometimes
  2. associated with blockage by a blood clot
  3. (thrombosis), in which case it is more
  4. accurately described as thrombophlebitis.
  5. Phlebitis may occur as a result of the
  6. hormonal changes associated with pregnancy,
  7. or due to long-term use of contraceptive
  8. pills, or following prolonged immobility
  9. (which is why patients are mobilized as soon
  10. as possible after surgery). If a major vein
  11. is involved, nearly always in a leg, the part
  12. beyond the blockage swells and may remain
  13. engorged for weeks. It is very painful.
  14. Treatment is with anticoagulant drugs and
  15. sometimes surgery.
